The internet is an international network and like every network it relies on protocols (standards) to define how it works. One fundamental protocol is called the Internet Protocol or IP. There are several versions of this but here we will look at IP version 4. In IP V4 each device gets a unique identifier which is a 32 bit number represented by 4 decimal numbers separated by dots. Each of these numbers is from 0 to 255. In the diagram on the left we have two PCs named PC1 and PC2. These are connected to a switch (more on this later).
